AlphaTauri‘s difficult start to the 2023 season has resulted in team boss Franz Tost expressing his lack of trust in the team’s engineers. The car failed to meet expectations and the team introduced a new floor during the Australian Grand Prix in an effort to find more speed. However, only Nyck De Vries was able to use the new floor after Yuki Tsunoda damaged his in FP1. Despite de Vries’ race ending due to being hit by Logan Sargeant on the final grid restart, he noted that the new floor and diffuser felt like a genuine step forward.
De Vries explained that the differences were quite subtle, but all development on the car was necessary due to the hard work everyone was putting in. He emphasized that all the little things were making a difference, and the team was working together to address and highlight potential areas for improvement. He acknowledged that finding performance was a moving target, and it was never good enough.
Regarding the new floor, De Vries stated that it definitely helped the team become more competitive. He noted that the midfield was tightly contested and a little difference could swing the result quickly. Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of continuing to push the team to get close to the top 10. The Dutchman ended by stating that the team would use the time they have now to learn about what they have brought to the table, hopefully using it to their advantage when bringing new updates and development to the car.
