Alpine intentionally didn’t reveal their full potential during testing at Sakhir by not using soft tyres or low fuel. In the second practice, Pierre Gasly was able to pick up the pace and finished seventh. However, during the qualification round, his teammate Esteban Ocon advanced to Q3 and earned ninth place on the grid, while Gasly struggled with understeer and traction issues, ending up last in Q1.
Gasly expressed his frustration and confusion about his performance. “It’s clearly a one-off…I looked for more front the whole weekend, and struggled with understeer. I don’t know why, it was just way too extreme for the conditions, and was a bit all over the place on all the exits,” he said to F1 Initiative. Gasly was comfortable throughout the practice but met difficulty in quali, stating he was unable to find the right car balance, and missed his expectations. However, he is confident that there’s more to show and will focus on the race.
Gasly admitted he was surprised by the speed of some of the cars on the track that kept him last on the grid. “We definitely didn’t expect these guys to show that much pace,” he noted. Gasly is looking to understand what went wrong and will continue to find ways to improve for the upcoming races.
