Aston Martin aims to bounce back to form against the prevailing F1 powerhouse, Red Bull as 2023 continues to unfold. The team, originating from Silverstone, began this year as a formidable competitor, but encountered a series of challenges that pulled them back.
The team’s decline was a result of an adjustment in car traits that unexpectedly followed recent developments, according to Aston Martin‘s team principal, Mike Krack. He shared this insight just prior to the Belgian Grand Prix held the previous weekend.
Signs of advancement became visible at the Belgian Grand Prix itself, where Fernando Alonso secured a fifth-place finish. The feeling that the AMR23 had regained its typical performance encapsulated Alonso‘s experience.
Krack now speculates that the team’s display throughout the latter half of 2023 will be enhanced by the introduction of new components, which will continue throughout the season, including at the Dutch event. “Every race includes upgrades, so take a look at the upgrade list for Zandvoort. It should provide an interesting read.”, he said.
While some other teams are shifting focus to their 2024 cars, Krack maintains that Aston Martin will stay committed to its current vehicle. He emphatically said, “Our development work is ongoing, we are not holding back.”
Krack believes that sustaining continual development is the best strategy for progress over the remainder of this year’s campaign. This approach would enhance the major leap the team had made over the previous winter.
When questioned if there was a significant strategic change that could catapult them to the front, Krack said: “If only I could confirm the existence of such a magic formula. Our development strategy is our plan, and it necessitates continually developing the car. This must be adjusted based on whatever circumstances arise.”
Further into the campaign, Krack mentioned that they now have an opportunity to reflect and pointed out, “we have ten times more points than at the same point last season. The elevated results naturally lead to increased expectations. However, a balance needs to be found, remembering where we started from and recognizing the significant strides we’ve made. Looking at the bigger picture helps us realize what we have accomplished.”
