Sergio Perez experienced a setback during qualifying for the Silverstone Grand Prix as he was sent out of the Red Bull garage during a red flag break. He had claimed the top spot in the queue at the exit, but had to wait longer than expected for the session to resume. This meant that he lost tyre temperature, resulting in a 16th place finish. However, he was later bumped up a place due to a penalty for Valtteri Bottas.
Perez expressed his disappointment with the situation, stating, “I think the red flag lasted longer than we predicted initially and that didn’t help for the temperature of the tyres.” He added that it was a shame to lose out after a strong Friday performance and acknowledged that starting from the back would require him to minimize the damage in the race.
The Mexican driver admitted that he struggles with cool weather and changing track conditions. He said, “I think in these conditions is where I struggle the most with the car. My issues with the car become more apparent in the changeable conditions.” Perez emphasized the need for the team to work together to understand how they can improve in these situations.
Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko acknowledged that tyre temperature was a factor in Perez‘s performance. He explained that they wanted him on track as soon as possible due to the potential for rain, but the lengthy delay in recovering Kevin Magnussen‘s car meant that Perez‘s tyres cooled down completely. This affected his ability to achieve the optimum lap time.
Marko also highlighted the importance of improvement in qualifying for Perez. He noted, “He needs to improve his qualifying in general. This is not the first time. But he has the bonus of always delivering pretty good races.” Marko expressed confidence that Perez would be able to make up positions during the race, given the track’s overtaking opportunities and Red Bull‘s advantage with DRS.
Overall, Perez‘s qualifying struggles continue with his fifth consecutive failure to make it into Q3. However, he remains hopeful for a strong performance in the race, aiming to score valuable points for the team.
