Formula 1 has announced its partnership with dementia research charity, Race Against Dementia (RAD), in an effort to accelerate breakthroughs in treatment and cure for dementia. RAD, which was established by three-times Formula 1 World Champion, Sir Jackie Stewart, OBE, aims to enable early career researchers and other dementia scientists worldwide to pursue innovative ideas at the highest level. This collaboration is particularly significant as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of Sir Jackie’s last Formula 1 World Championship win in 2023.
Commenting on the partnership, Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, expressed the organization’s pride in supporting Race Against Dementia. Domenicali recognized the devastating impact of dementia on individuals and families and commended Sir Jackie Stewart for his tireless efforts in raising awareness and funding for this cause. Formula 1 believes that its global platform can play a vital role in further highlighting awareness and helping find a cure for this widespread disease.
Sir Jackie Stewart, OBE, the Founder and Chair of Race Against Dementia, expressed his delight at Formula 1‘s appointment of RAD as an official charity. He emphasized the alignment between Formula 1 and medical research, both attracting some of the brightest and most creative minds. Sir Jackie drew attention to the alarming statistic that one in three people born today will die with dementia if a cure or prevention method is not found. Having witnessed the challenges faced by his wife, Helen, who was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in 2015, Sir Jackie has firsthand experience of the impact of this disease. He called for support in joining the race against dementia to combat this crisis.
Through this partnership, Formula 1 and RAD aim to leverage Formula 1‘s global platform and growing fan base to raise awareness of RAD’s crucial work and generate support for its fundraising efforts. Formula 1‘s involvement in promoting RAD’s cause will encourage drivers, sponsors, and fans to unite in the fight against dementia.
The collaboration between Formula 1 and Race Against Dementia holds immense promise in facilitating breakthroughs and creating a better future for those affected by dementia. With the backing of Formula 1, RAD’s research efforts are set to gain greater visibility and support from a worldwide audience. As the sport continues to excel in terms of innovation and problem-solving, this partnership showcases Formula 1‘s commitment to making a positive difference both on and off the racetrack.
