Despite a strong qualifying performance, Pierre Gasly has been hit with two lots of three-place grid penalties for blocking Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz during Q1. This will drop him from fourth to tenth on the grid for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Gasly‘s initial lap was the fourth-fastest time in Q3, placing him only 0.544s behind Verstappen. The French driver has defended himself, clearing that the incidents were unintentional, and he was only reacting with the information given at the time. Gasly has a history of incurring penalty points, but he will not face any penalty points on his licence for the latest grid penalty.
Lewis Hamilton, who initially qualified in fifth place, will now start from fourth behind Lando Norris after Gasly‘s penalties. Despite the setback, Gasly remains positive about the potential shown by his car. The new Alpine recruit has been improving every weekend and has been learning about the team as well. Although he is still coming to grips with the car, the Frenchman believes the team is making strides to improve it. While he is disappointed about the penalties, Gasly remains focused on the progress achieved so far and is looking forward to the race.
