In SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium, a considerable change in the management of the Ferrari team has been announced. Their Sporting Director, Laurent Mekies, is set to exit the team by the end of this week as he embarks on a new role. Mekies has been appointed the new team principal for AlphaTauri, effective from next year.
In the previous month, April, AlphaTauri had publicized their decision to welcome Mekies as team principal. He is set to take over from the current principal, Franz Tost, in the upcoming year. However, there had been no conclusive understanding regarding Mekies’ exit from Ferrari until now.
Up until the last weekend, Mekies was actively performing his duties as Ferrari‘s Sporting Director. This included his participation in the Hungarian Grand Prix. In readiness for his new role, he is now prepping to depart Ferrari ahead of this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix.
In the wake of Mekies’ departure, Diego Ioverno is set to step up, taking on Mekies’ role. Having spent 23 years as part of Ferrari, Ioverno’s experience will be no small factor in his new position this coming weekend. Meanwhile, Matteo Toginalli will continue in his capacity as head of track engineering with Ravin Jain maintaining his function as head of race strategy. In the management hierarchy, these three will now be reporting directly to Ferrari team principal, Fred Vasseur.
