Sergio Perez has secured pole position for the race after setting a time of 1m26.841s in the first flying runs of Q3. His Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen was unable to challenge after going wide through Turn 5 and retreating to the pitlane. Charles Leclerc tapped the wall on the exit of Turn 16 and suffered a lock-up at the following corner before crashing out on his final run, bringing out double-waved yellows and red flags, ending the session with Perez securing pole. Fernando Alonso secured his first front-row start this season alongside Perez while Carlos Sainz followed behind. Kevin Magnussen caught the attention of many by nailing his first attempt and starting on the second row of the grid, but is under investigation for impeding Lewis Hamilton in Q1. Pierre Gasly took fifth and George Russell broke through into Q3, securing sixth place. Esteban Ocon completed the top 10 lineup, with Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas failing to set representative times in Q3. Hamilton was unable to progress to Q3 and will start in 13th. Yuki Tsunoda and Lance Stroll join him at the back of the grid.
