The Dutch GP held last weekend witnessed a fiercely competitive race between Alonso and Aston since the competition that took place in Canada in June. Alonso demonstrated a vigorous performance, finishing second and nearly catching up with Max Verstappen, following the restart set in motion due to the red flag.
Alonso throughout this season has maintained a cautious stance about form. Yet, in the aftermath of the race, during his in-lap, he expressed an air of optimism with the words, “we will win one race soon, we are getting closer.”
Alonso marked his seventh podium, having secured the second-place finish for the third time in the 2023 season at Zandvoort. When asked by F1 Initiative to provide an explanation behind his invigorating message, Alonso said, “There are a couple of weekends where we seem a little bit closer.”
Expanding upon this, Alonso noted his close proximity to victory in Zandvoort along with his other second-place finishes, however, the challenge lies in facing an “outstanding Max and Red Bull, unbreakable.” Nevertheless, the Spanish driver affirmed that they are getting nearer to a win and need just a smidge of a boost in performance, luck, or well-timed pit stop. He expressed his positive outlook following Zandvoort race.
Speaking about his post-race comments, Alonso acknowledged, “Every time I open the radio, I think that I talk with my engineer forgetting that I talk to everyone in the world, and I would like those comments to be private.” Nevertheless, this was his feeling, and he is hopeful that in the upcoming races, they might attain the position to compete toe-to-toe against Max and be ready to take any extra risk.
Aston Martin team principal, Mike Krack, agreed with Alonso’s sentiments, stating that they had a genuinely optimistic effect on the entire Silverstone team. Krack called it a motivational speech best suited to boost the morale of the team and everyone else listening back home.
He further addressed the challenges of actually bridging the gap, saying, “But there is a difference in saying it and doing it. So we really have to work hard.” He acknowledged the excellent form of Max and Red Bull, saying, “The combination between Max and that car, they are outstanding.”
Finally, Krack mentioned that over the next races, they must pay attention to how their competitors grow and evolve. Stressing the importance of humility, he advised, “We need to stay humble and do our best and see what happens.”
